Constance Miller, junior at Greenon High School, is the school champion of the Poetry Out Loud competition that began in November in Greenon classrooms.  Saturday, Febrary 20th, Constance attended the state school champions wokshop held in Columbus at the State Library of Ohio.  Tracey Lewis, Constance's English teacher and Theresa McClain, program coordinator, attended with Constance.
At the workshop, the champions from high schools across the state observed professional poetry performers, practiced their poetry recitations in small and large groups, and received critiques by an informal panel of judges which included the state director of the Thurber House, the director of the Ohio Arts Council, and the state director for Poetry Out Loud.

According to Ms. McClain program coordinator, English teachers elected to participate in class recitations.  Students selected a poem from the Poetry Out Loud to memorize for class performance.  Teachers used the contest rubric for judging. Students were selected to progress to the school finals.  The finals, rescheduled four times due to weather, were held after school on February 18. Each student had to prepare 3 poems from memory for the finals.  Constance Miller was selected as the school champion, and Molly Sisco, freshman, was chosen as the alternate.

Poetry Out Loud is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.  Ohio has competed for the past three years.  This year 42 Ohio schools are registered for the State Finals to be held March 13 at Ohio Dominican University. People interested in learning more about Poetry Out Loud may visit www.poetryoutloud.org. Video clips from the national competition are available for viewing.  The winner of the national competition receives $20,000 prize.
