Rocky Point Chapel held their third annual spring fundraiser on Saturday May 4th with all the money raised supporting Honor Flight. Honor Flight is an organization out of Dayton that pays for veterans of World War II, Korean, and the Vietnam Wars to see their national memorials in Washington D.C. These trips cost nothing to the veterans and include airfare, bus transportation, meals, tee shirts, and disposable cameras.
The first year the church did a spaghetti supper and the money that was raised went to the Wounded Warrior Project. The following year the church started to get involved with Honor Flight and had a Ham and Bean, and Vegetable Soup Dinner with a Silent Auction. This year was again a soup dinner, but this time they held a real auction with the auctioneer being Clark County Sherriff and church member Gene Kelly. The auction gave guests a fun auction experience while supporting a great cause.
Members of the church helped make the ham and bean soup along with the vegetable soup and cornbread. Crackers and cornbread were set out on each table for the guest to snack on while they waited for their food. There were a variety of drinks guests could choose from like regular and decaf coffee, sweet and unsweetened tea, lemonade, and water.
Tickets were $6 for adults, $4 for seniors/children under 12/veterans, and free for children under 3 years of age. They started serving dinner at 4p.m. and there was a line of guests outside by 3:45.
The church’s youth group met the Wednesday night before to make cookies. They collected donations in exchange for the cookies in a bake sale during the dinner.
The auction started at 6p.m. and lasted for about an hour. There were 51 items being auctioned off with some of them being a hand painted American flag pallet, a muzzle-loader gun, complete set of tools, framed Leonardo Da Vinci drawings, a 2 hour house cleaning coupon, and gift cards to Great Wolf Lodge and Scene 75. There were also a number of baskets including one with adult coloring books, everything needed for an Italian dinner, family game night, kids summer toys, everything needed to make cupcakes, and nail care. There were also 5 30-minute rides in a historic airplane with museum tour included.
There were 73 people who came for the dinner and that totaled $344. The youth bake sale made $85 and they donated it back to Honor Flight. The auction and donations were the big money makers raising $3,058. This brought the total for the night up to $3,487.
The church is so thankful for everyone that came out for such a great cause and they are excited to start preparing for next years dinner.
